The Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems is the main event for exchange of ideas and information on multidisciplinary studies and research aimed at contributing to the interaction between users and computer systems. It is also the meeting point for researchers from universities and industries in Brazil and abroad, as well as designers, programmers, educators and people from different traditions and communities.
The Evaluation Competition seeks to motivate the participation of undergraduate students, graduate students and teachers in HCI, contributing to the training of these students. The Evaluation Competition has an essentially practical nature: participants make the evaluation of a computer system and thus apply their theoretical knowledge related to HCI evaluation methodologies..
With the increasingly pervasive presence of computer technology in our everyday lives, in IHC 2014 we reflect on the "Frontiers of Interaction". In this year's competition we will address the use of information technologies outside the traditional "boundaries" of desktop and web. We chose to analyze how technology can support sports activities, in particular common, simple and inexpensive physical activities: running and walking. This theme can also serve as an incentive to the physical and mental preparation for the first IHC Run & Walk, which will take place during IHC 2014. It is important that our community is integrated and prepared for this moment of relaxation and leisure.
Briefly, the 2014 Evaluation Competition is focused on how smartphone apps can support running and walking.
There are many challenges for frequent physical activities in the present busy and rushed everyday life. One of the most critical challenges is the motivation to start and maintain a regular physical activity. Different types of incentives can contribute to this: the support of friends, rewards, perceived improvement in physical capacity, goal setting, etc.. Furthermore, it is important to analyze one's performance during physical activity to make the necessary adjustments.
There are some smartphone applications that seek to support the practice of running and walking. These applications collect data during physical activity for later viewing and analysis. Some applications also enable integration with social networks like Facebook and Google+, and might be part of a larger ecosystem, integrated with applications on tablets, gaming consoles or the web. We selected some examples of applications for smartphones to support running and walking, which can be used as a starting point.
After the evaluation, each team must generate a report containing:
Teams must be comprised of at least 3 and at most 5 students plus an advisor (teacher) associated to an institution of higher education. Teams can only be formed by undergraduate, graduate students or a combination of both.
It is important that authors send an email to bruno@imd.ufrn.br and gil.barros@formato.com.br stating: title and number of the submission on the EasyChair system, and the name and position of the authors (undergraduate student, graduate student, professional, advisor).
To participate in the Competition, each team should follow three steps:
Cada relatório será avaliado por revisores com experiência comprovada em IHC ou em avaliação de sistemas interativos. Serão levados em conta os seguintes critérios de julgamento:
5 finalists will be selected for a short oral presentation, followed by questions from a group of evaluators, during the event, to be held in the city of Foz do Iguau, Paran, Brazil, between 27 and October 31, 2014. While desirable, is not mandatory that all members of the finalist teams are present on the presentation at HCI 2014. However, the presence of at least one member of team is required.
The selection of papers and subsequent presentation is conditional upon the submission of at least 3 submissions for the competition. If this condition is not satisfied, there will be no evaluation.
Each finalist team who presents their work at the conference will receive a Certificate of Recognition (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th place).
The organization will provide a free registration for one member of each team selected for oral presentation.
The reports of finalist teams will be published in the extended abstract of HCI 2014.
